Food drive winners, totals announced

GREENVILLE — Area families in need may have a little bit more to eat during the upcoming weeks, thanks in part to the donations made to the Herald-Banner Cares and Shares Food Drive.

The drive, which benefited Hunt County Shared Ministries (FISH), collected a whopping total of 178,507 pounds of food, which would not have been possible without the public’s generosity. Again this year, it was a familiar name which took the prize as the top contributor.

Since 2005, the Cares and Shares Food Drive has collected more than 570,000 pounds of food. The Authentic Life Church, formerly Fairview Church, has won the drive each year and again came out on top, bringing in 18,200 pounds of food. The church won $100, as well as a feature story in the Herald-Banner.

Second through sixth place groups each earned an 1/8 page advertisement in the paper, which were claimed by the Greenville Independent School District (6,759 pounds), the Greenville Lions Club (4,221 pounds), the Greenville Firefighters Association (3,500 pounds), Altrusa of Greenville (1,897 pounds) and ECI/Early Childhood Intervention (44 pounds).

The employees at L-3 in Greenville also submitted a big donation, which made it possible for the drive to top its announced goal of 150,000 pounds of food.

Two individuals — Bobby Griffis and Tommy Santana — who made donations each won a six-month subscription to the Herald-Banner.

All cash donations were computed at a rate of seven pounds per $1. All food donations were weighed.
