A volunteer group is being organized to mount an effort at cleaning up and maintaining an African American cemetery in Hunt County.
The first clean up event at Grundy Cemetery, 7116 State Highway 224, is scheduled early next month.
The Friends of Grundy Cemetery organization has set a planning meeting for 10 a.m. Saturday at Rivers of Love Church, 3710 Wellington Street in Greenville.
“Right now Grundy Cemetery looks terrible,” said the group’s Johnnie Barrett. “Our organization is wanting to do something about it.”
Volunteers are being asked to come out to Grundy Cemetery between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on October 5 to help with the first clean up effort.
The clean ups are planned twice a year, in April and October, with refreshments to be provided.
“We are asking people to donate their time and we are also asking for financial support as well,” Barrett said.
Anyone interested in assisting with the project can attend Saturday’s meeting or can call Barrett at 972-302-5510.
