Council to be recognized for Darkness to Light

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council is in line to be commended Tuesday, for helping shed light on preventing the threat of child sexual abuse.

The council is to be recognized for participating in the “Darkness to Light” program, and also intends to formally adopt a new Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy, during Tuesday’s regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also scheduled for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Hunt County Court at Law No. 1 Judge Andrew Bench will make the presentation, recognizing the city for achieving a “Partner in Prevention” designation, for training more than 90 percent of city employees. The Darkness to Light program seeks to protect children from sexual abuse by encouraging awareness and providing training; and by urging adults to prevent, recognize and react responsibly.

City Attorney Daniel W. Ray is also presenting the council with a resolution, calling for the adoption of revisions to the city’s personnel manual regarding adopting a Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Policy.

In a memo to the Council, Ray noted how a majority of city employees had completed the Darkness to Light program, adding he has been working with Bench to develop the proposed new policy.

“The policy will apply to City employees as well as volunteers involved with City programs or activities where the City has primary responsibility for the supervision and care of minor children,” Ray said.
