Successful seeding

LONE OAK — It was only mid-morning, but Bertram Cooper had already deemed Saturday a success.

And success wasn’t determined by the money that had already been generated by a huge sale that was under way in the parking lot at the old Lone Oak High School on College Street.

“We look at success in a different way,” said Cooper, executive director of Community Seeds, a community outreach organization based in Lone Oak.

“Success is not based on what people spend, but how much we can give to them. Already, we’ve given free school supplies, haircuts and we’ve shared the gospel with two people.”

The recipients were school students and their parents who came to the Community Seeds Back-2-School event held Saturday. The organization distributed backpacks and a general mix of school supplies.

There was a waiting line for free haircuts. Two women were on hand to provide back-to-school haircuts for boys and girls.

Along with the outside sale, an inside clothing sale was also hosted by Community Seeds.

Community Seeds is a faith-based, community outreach, providing services and programs for the less fortunate and underserved in Hunt and Rains counties.

Services and programs provided by Community Seeds include a clothes closet, emergency programs, educational classes, vocational training classes, health care screening and health fairs and service referrals.

The volunteer staff illustrated that the organization is community-based.

There were volunteers from Lowe’s in Greenville and from churches in Lone Oak, Emory, Quinlan and Greenville.

And they all wore brightly-colored lime green T-shirts. The message on the front of the shirt stated “Sowing hope, one family at a time.”
