Ralph Hall, Deuell headed to run-off elections

Two local incumbents will face challengers again on May 27 after they failed to receive a majority of the vote during Tuesday’s primary election.

Ralph Hall and John Ratcliffe will compete for the U.S. Representative, District 4 seat, while Bob Hall will take on incumbent Bob Deuell for Texas Senate, District 2.

The final numbers showed incumbent Congressman Hall with 45.42 percent of the vote and Ratcliffe with 28.77 percent. Hall, 90, received of 29,815 votes to Ratcliffe's 18,891.

Hall, who’s held the office since 1981 and is the oldest serving member of Congress, said his campaign has been good but the race has stayed close due to being outspent, and having less time on the campaign trail due to his schedule.

“We’ve led everywhere, but just haven’t led by enough,” Hall said. “We’ve been outspent and he [Ratcliffe] has money galore, but I’m proud to be in this run-off. I expected the race to come down to this and we haven’t done too bad. It’ll be a different race heading into May.”

Lou Gigliotti was the closest competitor to Hall and Ratcliffe, securing 10,592 votes, just 16.13 percent of the total. Former Fate councilmember John Stacy had 4.27 percent of the vote and Brent Lawson had 3.48 percent.

The race for the Texas Senate District 2 seat proved to be tighter than many expected.

Deuell, a family physician based in Greenville, hasn’t received a serious challenge since he won the Senate seat in 2002. Hall, a former captain in Air Force, is a small business owner from Florida.

Deuell finished with 23,847 votes (48.49 percent), while Hall took in 19,085 (38.81 percent).

Mark Thompson, who was also running for District 2, came in third.

Early voting for the primary run-off will take place May 19-23, with the run-off election day set for May 27.
