Prison sentence issued for theft from grave

GREENVILLE — A Caddo Mills man has been sentenced to prison for stealing from a grave.

Steven Eugene O’Donnell pleaded guilty Tuesday during a hearing in the 354th District Court to an indictment with one count of theft of property from a human corpse or grave.

Under a plea bargain arrangement, O’Donnell, 45, was sentenced to four years in the Texas Department of Corrections-Institutional Division.

O’Donnell was indicted by the Hunt County grand jury in October 2012.  He was alleged in the indictment to have stolen benches, flower pots and stones from a grave site on June 26, 2012. The indictment lists two previous convictions for possession of a controlled substance and one for felony theft.

The charge normally carries a maximum sentence of up to two years in a state jail, but due to O’Donnell’s criminal record, O’Donnell was facing a maximum punishment of up to 10 years in prison for a conviction.

O’Donnell also entered a separate guilty plea Tuesday to a charge of bail jumping/failure to appear and was sentenced to two years in prison, with the sentence to run concurrently.
