Another chilly night ahead

GREENVILLE — The coldest weather of the fall, so far, was expected across the region this morning.

The National Weather Service had issued a freeze warning for Hunt County and all of North Texas through the morning, as temperatures were forecast to dip into the 20s overnight. By coincidence, today is also Winter Weather Awareness Day in Texas.

The official low dipped to 28 in Greenville overnight and the high today was expected to reach 51 degrees, with a low near 30 by early Thursday.

It was an early freeze, as the National Weather Service reports the average first freeze in the North Texas area occurs November 22, with the average last freeze on March 13.

There is no frozen precipitation in the forecast through at least the weekend, and typically it will be several more weeks before Hunt County or North Texas sees any threat of ice or snow.

But for Winter Weather Awareness Day, the National Weather Service offered the following weather definitions to keep in mind in the weeks and months ahead:

— Winter Storm Watch: An advance statement that severe winter weather conditions are possible within the next day or two.

— Winter Storm Warning: An urgent statement that severe winter weather conditions have begun or will begin within about 12 hours.

— Winter Weather Advisory: Winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring. These conditions will cause significant inconvenience and may become life threatening if safety tips are not followed.

— Freezing rain/drizzle: Rain or drizzle which falls as liquid, then freezes when it strikes the ground or other surface.

— Heavy snow: A snowfall which accumulates to a depth of at least four inches in 12 hours, or six inches in 24 hours.

— Ice storm : An accumulation of one-quarter inch or more of freezing rain.

— Sleet: Pellets of ice composed of frozen or mostly frozen raindrops, or snowflakes which have melted and refrozen.
