A group of local residents intends to meet again this week and continue reviewing the document which regulates how the City of Greenville operates.
The Citizens Charter Review Committee is scheduled to meet at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street.
The committee met for the first time last week and began an examination of Sections 1 through 26 of the Charter, and is set to continue to continue the review Thursday before voting on any recommended revisions to those sections.
The committee also is scheduled Thursday to begin reviewing Sections 27-79 of the Charter, which cover everything from the scheduling and order of City Council meetings, the procedures for passing ordinances, the duties and employment of the City Manager, the city budget process and the issuance and sale of bonds.
It is not yet certain whether the committee can complete its review and provide recommendations to the Council in time for the inclusion of any proposed changes to the Charter on the May municipal election ballot.
The Charter is the document which contains the rules and regulations governing how the Council, the city administration and related agencies do business.
State law allows the charter to be amended every two years and to also reflect changes in state law if needed.
The last Charter review resulted in an election in May 2010 during which Greenville’s registered voters passed all 13 proposed amendments on the ballot.
