Using ImagiNation in serving community

NEW PROJECT WILL TEACH STUDENTS INVALUABLE THINKING SKILLS, TEAM MANAGER SAYS

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Independent School District has been taking different approaches to educating students. One of those approaches includes Destination ImagiNation projects.

Andrea Foote, a team manager for Destination Imagination, said that her students’ new project will teach invaluable critical thinking skills.

“Our project is called Real to Reel,” she said. “The students will find a community need, fill the need and document that need. They will give an eight minute presentation over that outreach. This encourages critical thinking skills and independence, teamwork and thinking outside the box.”

The project, which will be created either through the use of video equipment or other means of motion, Foote said will be completely led by the students.

“They have to lead the charge in figuring out how they’re going to face the challenge,” she said. “We have to sit back and let them lead.”

One of 12 questions will be answered during each team’s eight minute presentation, which will be made to resemble a staged press conference.

“They know what the 12 questions are,” Foote said. “But not which one they will be answering.”

Foote’s team currently is hosting a food and blanket drive for the Greenville Animal Shelter and will present their project to other team leaders Feb. 16.

The team will then present their project to in the Greenville Municipal Auditorium in late February before going to Mesquite on March 2 for competition.

“There is a lot to be gained whether they win or not,” she said. “Though we have teams that have been to the world championships in Tennessee.”

Foote said the team is looking for volunteers to help with the show in the GMA, and that anyone looking to be an appraiser or volunteer can contact Emily Duke at 903-453-3739.
