Not so fast on parkway

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council has approved a new and increased speed limit for Monty Stratton Parkway, but not one as fast as had been expected.

The Council was scheduled to vote Tuesday on setting the limit along the parkway, between Interstate 30 and Lions Lair Road. Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim said the road, which was officially opened in late January, does not yet have a posted speed limit.

“By state law, the speed limit if not posted is a maximum 30 mph,” Ebrahim said, adding he had completed a traffic study of the roadway. “The study determined the maximum speed limit for this segment is going to be 50 mph.”

Ebrahim said the Council had the authority to lower the speed limit, but not raise it.

A similar study had been used to set the speed limit on Traders Road at 45 mph.

But both the Council and members of the city staff noted while Traders is a four-lane divided roadway with curbs and gutter, Monty Stratton Parkway is two concrete lanes with a raised median and open ditches on either side between the interstate and Lions Lair Road.

“It wouldn’t’ take much to go into the grassy area,” said City Manager Steven Alexander. “Something less than 50 mph might be prudent.”

“It is very narrow, that’s my problem with it,” said Council member Dan Perkins.

“I think 50 is too high,” said Police Chief Dan Busken. “I’m much more comfortable with 45.”

“I’m much more comfortable with 40,” Alexander said.

The Council agreed and voted unanimously to establish a 40 mph speed limit along the roadway.

The ordinance will be in full force and effect within 10 days after the Council’s vote and publication and after the installation of speed limit signs.
