GISD election includes $72 million in bonds

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Independent School District Board of Trustees voted this week to add a $72 million bond package to the ballot for the May election.

The board also agreed Tuesday to give Superintendent Don Jefferies a raise.

The May 10 school district election ballot will feature Places 2, 3 and 4 on the Greenville ISD Board, and will also include the proposed bond package to pay for a new Bowie Elementary School, a new career and technology center at Greenville High School and other items.

Mitchal Vaughn has announced  he intends to file for the Place 4 seat, while Dr. Kim Hunt Butcher has filed for re-election to the Place 3 seat.

Tom Durham and Trudy Wineinger serve in Places 2 and 4 respectively. Both are eligible to seek re-election, although Wineinger has chosen not to seek another term.

Filing for the school board election continues through February 25 at the Wesley Martin Administration Building, 4004 Moulton Street.

The GISD Bond Steering Committee proposed a bond totaling $72,274,964, which would be used to pay for safety and security upgrades for all campuses, construction a new Bowie Elementary School, construction of a Career and Technology Academy addition to the high school, renovations and various improvements at each campus and technology upgrades for all campuses.

The board had voted unanimously February 11 to extend Jefferies’ contract for one year, but delayed consideration of his  evaluation and salary until Tuesday’s meeting.

Following a closed session as part of Tuesday’s agenda, the board agreed to give Jefferies a $5,000 raise. He is scheduled to earn $169,658.50 during the current fiscal year.
