Joshua Madison Newkirk remains in custody in connection with last week’s fatal shooting in Caddo Mills.
A memorial service has been scheduled for Joshua Edmund Gerber, the person whom Newkirk was alleged to have killed during the Friday afternoon incident. A benefit account has also been established for Gerber’s children.
Newkirk, 28, is being held on one count of murder in the Hunt County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond. As of Monday evening, there was no record of Newkirk having filed a writ of habeas corpus, seeking the appointment of an attorney and/or a reduction in his bond.
According to a report from the Caddo Mills Police Department, Newkirk allegedly shot Gerber three times with a .25 caliber pistol following an altercation at a residence on Farr Street in Caddo Mills.
Gerber was unresponsive at the scene and later pronounced dead at Hunt Regional Medical Center by Justice of the Peace Wayne Money.
It was the first murder reported in Hunt County this year and the first homicide recorded in Caddo Mills in several years.
Memorial services for Gerber have been scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Lone Oak Baptist Church.
Memorials may be made for the care of Gerber’s three sons at www.youcaring.com/other/the-gerber-boys-fund/13911.
