Audie Murphy Days starting today

GREENVILLE — Audie Murphy Days, a celebration honoring Hunt County hero Audie Murphy as well as all veterans who have served this country, opens Friday and continues through Saturday.

Scheduled activities and times include:

Friday, May 17, Fletcher Warren Civic Center

9 a.m., Exhibition room opens/registration/coffee

9:30 a.m.,Morning session open with Ron Wensel, master of ceremonies

Posting colors, Sgt. Audie Murphy Club from Fort Sill, Okla.

Invocation, Kenny Jones, Salvation Army

Pledge of Allegiance led by John Hanners

National Anthem, Royce Slough

Welcome, by John Hanners, museum president

Musical interlude, Jordan Ricks, GHS music director

Guest speaker, Staff Sgt. Eric Slough, Fort Sill, Okla., only member of Sgt. Audie Murphy Club from Hunt County

Musical interlude, Greenville Middle School Select Choir

Recognition of veterans, Hunt County Veterans Honor Guard

Guest speaker, retired Lt. Col. Don Houk as Gen. Jimmy Doolittle of World War II fame

Recognition of Murphy family members

Retire colors, Sgt. Audie Murphy Club, Fort Sill, Okla.

11:30 a.m. - 1:45 p.m., Exhibit Hall open

2 p.m., Film Medley: “Behind Nazi Guns” - “Medal of Honor’ with Audie Murphy; newsreels from the 1940s

5-6 p.m., Audie Bingo, with caller Larry Winters

7 p.m., Concert by Mark Wright. Tickets $12 adults, $5 children 5-12. Incudes spaghetti dinner from 6-7 p.m. by James Horn. Donations benefitting Audie Murphy Days 2014.
