One in custody following Facebook hoax

A juvenile was taken into custody Thursday morning, after allegedly posting a threat on Facebook which resulted in local schools briefly being placed on lockdown.

The Greenville Police Department issued a statement in which the suspect admitted the threat was intended as a hoax. The child’s grandfather reportedly turned the suspect over to the police. No information regarding the identity, age or gender of the suspect was immediately released.

According to the police department, the threat read: “Bo! Tomorrow is Gonna Make Greenville infamous its like 200 Pending Deaths Tomorrow” #R.I.P.”

This threat was removed from Facebook and a subsequent post indicated the threat was a joke.

The police department wasn’t laughing however, and notified the Greenville Independent School District, which instituted an external lockdown on all campuses.

During the morning, the grandfather of the suspect brought the juvenile to the Greenville Police Department, where the suspect was interviewed and admitted to making the post as a joke, according to Greenville Police Chief Dan Busken.

“The Greenville Police Department takes any threat seriously and begins immediate action to protect the community,” Busken said. “Fortunately, this incident was resolved quickly, with the suspect coming forward and admitting to making the threat. The juvenile has been placed in Juvenile Detention, and we are continuing with the investigation and reviewing any charges that may filed in connection with this case.”

Greenville ISD Superintendent Don Jefferies said the lockdown at the schools was lifted after the police department indicated the suspect was in custody.

“I know that moments like these create cause for anxiety, but we believe that our first obligation to this community is the safety and well-being of our students and staff,” Jefferies said.
