Police taking aim at gun safety

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Police Department is planning on operating a shooting gallery at the Hunt County Fair this year, in an effort to teach children about gun safety.

In a memo to the Greenville City Council, Police Chief Daniel J. Busken said the department is hoping to recreate the success of last year’s inaugural effort, which attracted hundreds of children to the exhibit.

“Experience shows that hands on training and education are more effective than only handing out literature,” Busken said.

The council is required to approve issuing a permit for the event, with the vote scheduled during tonight’s regular agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also set for 5 p.m. today.

The Hunt County Fair is scheduled earlier this year than in the past, with its run set April 25-May4.

The Greenville Police Department operated a shooting gallery during last year’s Fair, inside the Law Enforcement Building.

Children can participate in the shooting gallery after watching a 15-to-30 second video on gun safety.

“Once the video has been viewed, the child is allowed to shoot at the target,” Busken said. “The target is a simple bull’s-eye target and has gun safety tips bordering the outside. The child may then take his or her target home. The shooting galley is enclosed and safety glasses are provided. The shooting gallery uses air soft plastic bb’s and is built to keep the projectiles inside the booth. Other gun safety education during the Hunt County Fair consists of book marks and flyers.”

Busken said the gallery drew 300 children to take part last year.
