Wesley Street Cruisers plan Labor Day event

GREENVILLE — Rock and roll music, hot rods, motorcycles, driving to be seen and a Sunday morning church service led by Elvis are among the activities scheduled in Greenville during the Labor Day weekend, as part of the Fourth Annual “Wesley Street Cruise Night.”

What began in 2009 as an informal get-together of old school chums who also happen to be classic car enthusiasts has grown into a three day event, which is expected to attract hundreds of people for a car show, a concert and, of course, the namesake cruise along both Wesley and Lee streets.

Events are scheduled to begin on the evening of Friday, August 30, with a 6 p.m. visit to the former Greenville High School, now Greenville Middle School, at 3611 Texas Street for a tour and photos. The cruise begins at 7 p.m. and ends with the “Sonic Boom”, as the cruisers invade the Sonic Drive-In.

The focus shifts to Market Square, 2210 Lee Street, on Saturday, August 31. A swap meet starts at 9 a.m., with registration for the car and bike show, with more than 20 classes featured, starting at 12:30 p.m. The car and bike show itself runs from 2 until 4 p.m., followed by live music from Tribute to CCR and Then and Again until 7 p.m., when a cruise parade down Lee and Wesley Streets starts is set to begin.

A “Hot Rod Church” service/“Cruisin’ On The Heavenly Highway” rally, featuring Harvey McFadden as Elvis, is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Sunday, September 1 in the pavilion at Graham Park, followed by a picnic to wrap up the activities.
