Saturday’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Greenville will have not one, but six grand marshals.
Dan Perkins with the Corporation for Cultural Diversity (CCD) of Greenville, Texas said the organization selected six retired local educators who were involved with or affected by the era of the civil rights movement.
“We wanted to get a representative group that would represent all of the teachers of that time,” Perkins said.
The grand marshals are Jill Baker, Ruth Blakely, Lena Dennis, Sarah Skillerns, Charles Sivley and Romina Wallace.
The CCD, the NAACP Greenville Branch and the Greenville Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance are sponsoring the 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. birthday celebration.
The events will begin Saturday with a 5K “Run Against Racism”, starting from Market Square at the intersection of Lee and Bois d’Arc Streets in downtown Greenville.
The entry fee is $25, and includes a run T-shirt. Registration will be conducted on site starting at 7 a.m. Saturday, the event will begin at 8 a.m., and can be a race, a run or a walk, depending on the entrant.
The Annual MLK Parade is scheduled to begin from Market Square at 10 a.m. Saturday, with staging one half-hour earlier. Following the parade, a youth extravaganza will be hosted at 11 a.m. by the NAACP Greenville Branch in the Greenville Municipal Auditorium.
The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Observance will be hosted by the Greenville Inter-denominational Ministerial Alliance, starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, January 19 at St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 1602 Joe Ramsey Boulevard in Greenville.

On Sunday, the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Awards Celebration has been scheduled at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, 202 Champion Lane in Commerce, starting at 2:30 p.m. The award is being presented to those individuals who demonstrate King’s legacy of raising public consciousness to social justices, securing progress on civil rights, and loving and serving humanity.
