Most of county starts year under drought

— Most of Hunt County began 2014 under moderate drought conditions.

The water levels on many area lakes also remain well below normal for the start of the year.

According to the United States Drought Monitor, the areas of Hunt County around Wolfe City, Commerce and Lone Oak are listed under “abnormally dry” conditions, while the remaining areas of the county were included under “moderate drought” conditions.

The information was released Thursday, although the measurements were taken locally on the morning of December 31.

The level on Lake Tawakoni Friday was reported to be 428.76  feet and the lake was 66.7 percent full.

Tawakoni is faring better than some nearby lakes. Lake Lavon was reported to be 48.3 percent full as of Friday, while Cooper Lake was 34.4 percent full Friday.
