Restoration of Greenville's historic Texan Theater still under way

GREENVILLE — Work is progressing on renovating a marquee name in downtown Greenville.

The Texan Theater is getting closer to opening its doors. Barbara Horan of Austin, who is in charge of the project said it could be an operating business again by next summer.

“We should switch from contractors to me in July 2014,” Horan said. “By August the Texan Lobby Coffee Shop should be open most days.”

Horan has been responsible for the effort and has promised a venue featuring “exceptional food with remarkable entertainment.” She has envisioned an intimate dinner and entertainment experience for about 250 people when the renovations are completed.

The theater also has an educational component, called Friends of the Texan, which involves educating thought contact with theater. Friends of the Texan brought actor, singer and songwriter Kris Kristofferson to Greenville for a fundraising event in October. Kristofferson performed alongside Lukas Nelson — WIllie’s son — in the living room of the Dairy Manor .

“Another event sponsored by Friends of the Texan for area youth will happen in the spring,” Horan said.

The Texan is included among the League of Historic American Theaters and at one time was one of four downtown Greenville movie theaters, also including the Colonial, the Rialto and the Rita. The Texan was probably the last to close, sometime in the 1970s.

The theater’s marquee has been completely restored and is being lit for special occasions.
