GEUS board scheduled to talk about ice

GREENVILLE — Officials with the local electric utility system will be talking about ice this week.

The GEUS board of trustees is to receive an Ice Storm Restoration Status Report from General Manager David McCalla during Thursday’s regular session agenda, starting at  6 p.m. in the board room of the GEUS Operations Center, 6000 Joe Ramsey Boulevard.

The board is also set to award a bid for tree trimming services, which officials with the utility credit for minimizing tree related outages when icing occurs in the area.

Residents of Greenville and Hunt County awoke on the morning of December 6 to find approximately one inch of freezing rain and sleet had accumulated overnight, causing limbs and even whole trees to collapse onto power lines, resulting in multiple electrical outages.

Late last week, McCalla issued a statement indicating approximately 1,000 GEUS customers lost power for varying periods of time. McCalla said GEUS crews were able to get power to many homes restored quickly by clearing trees from main feeders.

Other customers were out for a more extended period of time as trees had to be cleared from many distribution lines throughout the territory.

GEUS crews worked more than 1,570 man hours from the night of December 5 until all power was restored, although some customers required electricians to make repairs to the equipment.

“We fared much better than what might have been”, McCalla said. “If we had experienced strong winds, the combination of wind and ice would have knocked down even more trees. I’m very proud of the above and beyond effort our employees put into restoring power for our community. We have a very dedicated group of employees that worked long hours in harsh weather and in hazardous conditions that were determined to get GEUS’ customers’ power back on as quickly as possible.”
