City council to award water tower rehab contract

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council is preparing to award a contract worth more than a half-million dollars to pay for the rehabilitation of one of the city’s big elevated water storage tanks.

The Council is scheduled to conduct a public hearing Tuesday before awarding the contract to A & M Construction and Utilities of Rowlett for the 2013 Webb Street Water Tower Rehabilitation. The vote is included under Tuesday’s regular session agenda, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street.

According to a memo to the Council from Interim City Manager/Director of Public Works Massoud Ebrahim, required Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) inspections on the city’s water tanks were performed in 2009 by Dunham Engineering and again in 2012 by Texas Tank Services, both of which made recommendations for rehabilitation of the 1 million gallon elevated storage tank located on Webb Street.

“The 2009 report clearly notes the need for rehabilitation in the near future and that delaying the rehabilitation beyond three years could result in the need for extensive repairs to the rafters,” Ebrahim said.

Bid notices were advertised in the Herald-Banner and on the city’s web site and the city received seven bids.

Ebrahim said A & M Construction and Utilities was the lowest responsible bidder with a base bid of $516,000.

As a budget amendment is needed to authorize the expenditure, the Council is required to conduct a public hearing prior to the vote being taken.
