Boys & Girls Club members to host car wash, bake sale

GREENVILLE — Need a mid-day snack? How about a car wash? Some local children have you covered, and you can return the favor.

From Aug. 6-8, Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Texas will be hosting a car wash, bake sale and lemonade stand in the parking lot of the Reecy Davis Recreation Center at 4320 Lee Street. All proceeds from the event will benefit the club’s SMART Girls program, a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls ages 8-17. The event will occur each take from 9 a.m. to noon.

“The idea came from our club members who are in the SMART Girls program,” Boys & Girls Club Director of Program Development Joshua Slinkard said. “They’re hoping to use the funds to hold a lock-in to celebrate the completion of the summer program.”

Donations of supplies are welcome. Soap, towels or buckets for the car wash, lemonade mix or cups for the lemonade stand, or items for the bake sale can be dropped off at the Reecy Davis Recreation Center any time from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Contact site director Kevin Heath at 903-455-9233 for more information.

“I think it’s a great idea to help teach them the value of working hard to achieve their goals,” Slinkard said.

The Boys & Girls Club of Northeast Texas serves more than 300 Greenville and Commerce students through their after school and summer programs, which teaches their members how to live healthy lifestyles while focusing on developing good character and citizenship and fostering academic success.
