Hunt County shows support for West victims

Two loads of donations delivered, more being sought

GREENVILLE — Organizers of an effort to provide relief supplies to the victims of last week’s fertilizer plant explosion in West have already made two trips to the area and are planning a third for this weekend.

“They are going to be making another drop off Saturday,” said Jeff Haines with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Association, who along with Brittany Peters with Coker-Mathews Funeral Home/Odyssey Hospice and the Cash Volunteer Fire Department collected donations Thursday and Friday.

“We had several very generous donations,” Haines said, noting the initial contributions were enough to fill a U-Haul trailer, which was driven to the fire department in Abbott Saturday morning. “They had another big pickup load which was taken down there Saturday night.”

Haines said donations of specific items are still being collected.

“Brittany learned from them that they are in desperate need of school supplies and gift cards from Wal-Mart or Home Depot in order to buy supplies to secure homes affected by the blast,” Haines said.

Donations can still be dropped off at Coker-Mathews Funeral Home in Greenville and at the Cash Volunteer fire department station.

“I have to say with all the horrible things that have happened across the country and our state in the past week this has been a very humbling experience to see out County pull together and give so generously,” Haines said.

— Lala’s Hair Boutique on U.S. Highway 69 in Lone Oak is also seeking donations for the victims of the explosion.

— The Greenville 4-H is also accepting donations of supplies for West. The group is taking contributions through May 2 at the Hunt County Extension Office, 2217 Washington Street in downtown Greenville. Among the items being collected are hand sanitizer, water and sports drinks.
