Final hearing set in murder probation case

GREENVILLE — A local man could learn today whether his probation on a charge of murder in connection with the death of his infant daughter will be revoked, after he admitted to driving without a license.

During an April 3 hearing in the 196th District Court, Rickey Allen Turner Jr. entered pleas of “true”, equivalent to a plea of guilty, to allegations he had violated his probation.

Judge Steve Tittle found the allegations were true and that Turner had violated his probation and scheduled a final hearing for this morning.

Turner, 26, of Greenville was convicted of a juvenile charge of murder in October 2005. Turner had been accused of causing the death of his daughter, two-month old Kirriomma Turner, in March 2004, when he was 16 years old. Witnesses who testified during the trial in the Hunt County Court-at-Law indicated the child suffered head trauma after being violently shaken.

Turner agreed to plead guilty to the murder charge and in return, prosecutors agreed not to pursue a charge of capital murder in the case.

The judge in the case sentenced Rickey Turner to 10 years in prison, then probated the sentence for 10 years.

Turner was given 60 days in jail as a sanction on his probation after he was arrested last year for driving while his license was suspended and a motion to revoke his probation was dismissed.

Turner was arrested by the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office again on the evening of January 21 after being found driving without a license for the third time. Another motion to revoke Turner’s probation on the murder charge was filed February 6 and he was also alleged to not be participating in the community service restitution program.
