Fishing on a Friday

GREENVILLE — The fish population at the Graham Park “lake” in Greenville has been reduced significantly, following the 17th Annual David Dickson Memorial Fishing Friday event.

Crowds of youngsters spent the first morning of summer casting lines in the water. Most relied on the cane poles, bobbers, hooks and worms supplied by the Greenville Police Department, while others brought their own fishing equipment.

Volunteers from the Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association and the Greenville Police Explorers Post assisted those who needed it and it wasn’t long before fish of various sizes and species were being brought in to be weighed and measured.

Friday’s event, part of the Greenville Police Department “Summer of Safety” program, returned to Graham Park after spending one summer at the Greenville SportsPark, while Graham Park was undergoing renovations.

When not fishing, the children enjoyed the benefits of the renovations, as they climbed over the new playground equipment or got drenched in the splash pad, before enjoying a free hot dog lunch.

The Summer of Safety continues next week, with Swimming Friday at Ja-Lu Pool set for June 28, Movie Friday will be July 5 at Greenville Middle School, Skating Friday rolls out on July 12 at Skate Safari and the Teen Police Academy will be held July 15-19.
