County starting summer under a drought

GREENVILLE — Most of Hunt County is starting summer under a moderate drought, with no rain in the upcoming forecast.

Today is the first official day of summer, with the astronomical summer solstice occurring at 12:04 a.m. It will also be the longest day of the year.

After an official high temperature of 91 degrees Thursday at Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, the extended weather forecast from the National Weather Service was calling for the highs into the lower 90s each day during the next week, not bad for this time of year in Texas.

But the forecast did not include any chances for precipitation during the next seven days and rain is definitely needed in the area.

The majority of Hunt County was reported this week to be experiencing “moderate” drought conditions under the United States Drought Monitor.

Data for the report was collected Tuesday and reported Thursday.

The level on Lake Tawakoni was listed at 431.85 feet Monday afternoon, almost six feet below its normal pool elevation.

No water usage restrictions are currently in place for the City of Greenville, although cities served by the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD), which provides water to more than 1.6 million north Texas residents, including those served by the Caddo Basin Special Utility District and the Cash Special Utility District in Hunt County, are currently under Stage 3 outdoor watering restrictions.

Last year, Greenville did not see its first triple digit high temperature until June 25. Majors Field recorded 21 days of triple digit temperatures during the summer of 2012 and another eight days of 99 degree high temperatures. There was a 10-day stretch of triple digit afternoon heat recorded locally between July 29 and August 7. Twice, on August 1 and again on August 9, the mercury in the thermometer  climbed to 106 degrees. Temperature readings for two days last summer were unavailable.
