GISD board to vote on learning center easement

GREENVILLE — The establishment of an Outdoor Learning Center in Greenville is expected to be one step closer to reality after tonight.

The Greenville Independent School District Board of Trustees is expected to approve the granting of a temporary easement to the City of Greenville and the Boys and Girls Club, allowing the city and the club to use a portion of the property at Carver Elementary School for the project.

The board is also scheduled to give thanks to the members of the board and to nominate Superintendent Don Jefferies as Texas Superintendent of the Year during tonight’s meeting, starting at 6 p.m. in the Wesley Martin Administration Building, 4004 Moulton Street.

Funds for the Outdoor Learning Center were raised by last year’s Greenville Follies production. The City of Greenville is working in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of Northeast Texas to build the center, which will require landscape improvements such as an all-purpose sports field, pavilion/outdoor classroom, low-ropes course, and a club garden/rain water collection system.

In order to make the facility the appropriate size, the city and the club are asking the school district for a temporary property easement to extend the Outdoor Learning Center onto district property on the north side of the current driveway area of Carver Elementary.

The district’s administration is recommending the board grant the easement, with the understanding that if the district has need of the property in the future, then the easement will be forfeited.

— As Governor Rick Perry has designated January as School Board Recognition Month in Texas, prior to tonight’s meeting, a dinner will be provided the board by the Greenville High School Culinary Arts’ department, entertainment will be provided by the Greenville High School Lion Pride Band and Greenville ISD elementary students will present personalized artwork to the trustees.

— And the school board is also set this evening to nominate Jefferies for the honor of Texas Association of School Boards Superintendent of the Year award.
