Date set for extended grand jury meeting

GREENVILLE — It will be a little while before we learn what the previous grand jury still had on its plate last month.

Following its June 27 session, the grand jury which was serving the 196th District Court asked for and received a 90-day extension on its six-month term.

The panel has been scheduled to convene on September 26.

Exactly what the grand jury will be investigating has not been made public, but it will be a case or cases presented before the panel during its scheduled term for which the grand jurors believed they did not have enough time to investigate.

The grand jury issued 330 indictments during its regularly scheduled term.

A new grand jury is to be seated this month to begin a six-month term of considering cases for the 354th District Court.

The specifics of the cases which are presented to the grand jury are kept confidential until such time as the panel decides whether or not to issue indictments.

The grand jury can either issue indictments — or “true bills” — or determine its investigation did not find sufficient evidence to issue an indictment, in which case a “no bill” is issued.

The indictments are issued open and made public, or are issued sealed if the subject named in the indictment has yet to be arrested and arraigned on the pending charge.

A Hunt County grand jury has not served an extended term since 1996, when a panel issued indictments against three suspects in the murder of Sandy Dial of Garland.
