Wanting to add more colors to GISD

GREENVILLE — Greenville resident Olivia Mexia wants students at Greenville Independent School District to be more colorful.

After the Greenville ISD School Board of Trustees voted to add two more colors to the dress code, Mexia said she would like to see all colors added while still keeping the dress code.

“I like the dress code,” she said, adding it helps teachers focus more on teaching and less on whether a students’ clothes are too revealing. “I think it’s a good thing and does a great job.”

To that end, Mexia is hosting a petition signing Sunday at Aunt Char’s Kid Zone inside the Greenville Sports Park from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. to raise awareness for people who want all colors of polo shirts to be added to the dress code.

Mexia said she has been met with positive feedback through social network sites such as Facebook.

“Several people have sent me messages on Facebook and commented that they want to be there,” she said. “I have an inbox full of people who want to sign.”

Mexia said the two extra colors will not help much in the way of encouraging people to shop local.

“Only adding two colors is just not going to do much,” she said, adding that Phoenix Charter School has blue uniforms and that finding a grey shirt for girls is already hard to find. “I think it should be open to all colors.”

Although she wants to add more colors to the code, Mexia said she does not want to come off as confrontational with the district she cares a lot for.

“We love our district. I don’t want the district to feel we are stepping on their toes,” she said, adding she just wants more choice in what her children wear. “Let us choose the colors our kids wear.”
