Bond reduction sought in aggravated kidnapping case

GREENVILLE — A Dallas County man is seeking a reduction in his bond on a charge of aggravated kidnapping, in connection with a reported hostage situation in which he allegedly held a woman at gunpoint.

Brock Dickerson Garner, 35, of Balch Springs remained in custody at the Hunt County Jail Wednesday, in lieu of $20,000 bond on a charge of aggravated kidnapping/using hostage as shield.

Garner had filed a writ of habeas corpus from the jail, seeking a reduction in his bond and/or the appointment of an attorney. A hearing had not been scheduled on the writ as of Wednesday evening.

Garner was also being held in local custody on a total of $20,000 bond on two possession of a dangerous drug charges out of Kaufman County.

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office was called out late on the night of June 4 on a disturbance at a residence on Taylor Drive east of Quinlan.

Upon arrival, deputies reported encountering Garner holding a shotgun to an elderly woman in a wheelchair as a hostage. Deputies were able  convince Garner to put the gun down, but then he allegedly picked up a knife and held it to his throat, threatening to commit suicide.

Deputies were also able to talk Garner into putting the knife down.

Aggravated kidnapping is a first degree felony, punishable upon conviction by a maximum sentence of from five to 99 years to life in prison and an optional fine of up to $10,000.
