Bond reduction sought in stolen pickups case

GREENVILLE — A Hunt County man, arrested last week after a high speed chase involving state and area law enforcement agencies investigating stolen vehicles from two counties, is seeking a reduction in his bond.

Charles Ray Wolford Sr. has filed a writ of habeas corpus from the Hunt County Jail, where he is being held in lieu of a total of $310,000 bond on three counts of unauthorized use a vehicle and one count of evading arrest. A hearing had not been scheduled in the 196th District Court concerning the writ as of Tuesday evening.

Hunt County Sheriff Randy Meeks said sheriff’s investigators along with Texas Department of Public Safety and the North Texas Auto Theft Task Force had recently been working thefts of Ford F-350 series trucks and had received information that am 2006 Ford F-350, reported stolen out of Plano, was on the Brookshire’s parking lot in Quinlan on the afternoon of May 29.

Meeks said personnel from all of the agencies involved joined with the Plano Police Department in a set up on the stolen pickup.

Wolford reportedly got into the truck and proceeded south on State Highway 34 toward Terrell, before fleeing an attempted traffic stop. The chase ended just inside the Kaufman County line with no injuries.

Wolford, 49, of Quinlan, has been charged with one count each of unauthorized use of a vehicle and evading arrest from Hunt County, one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle from Collin County and one count of unauthorized use of a vehicle by the Plano Police Department.
