HMHD board considers bond election

GREENVILLE — Hunt County voters could be asked this fall to approve bonds for a new outpatient facility in Commerce.

The Hunt Memorial Hospital District Board is considering calling for a bond election on the November 5 ballot. The item was included on the board’s July 23 agenda, but a vote to call for the election was not taken at that time. The board has not yet determined the size of the bond, or if one would be needed.

“The board has voted to build a freestanding emergency department in Commerce; however, the full scope of the project has not yet been determined by the board,” said the district’s Lisa Hill. “A potential bond is contingent on the final scope of the project, as this has not yet been determined by the board, we do not have a figure for you at this time.”

Earlier this month John Heatherly, assistant administrator at Hunt Regional Healthcare, said the organization is considering building a $4 million outpatient facility in Commerce, with construction to begin next summer.

The current facility at 2900 Sterling Hart Drive in Commerce would not be able to contain the new operation. The district is currently looking at parcels of land along State Highway 24.

The hospital board has until August 26 to call for a bond election on November 5, which is also scheduled to be the date of the election to determine the fate of proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution.
