Area rainfall remains well below normal

GREENVILLE — Greenville and Hunt County ended 2013 having received far less rainfall than normal.

The area has suffered through four straight dry years, and most of the region’s lakes are still feeling the affects of the drought at the start of 2014.

One rain gauge revealed Greenville received 35.16 inches of precipitation last year, which compares to the 30-year average of 44.65 inches. Another gauge, at Majors Field Municipal Airport, indicated Greenville received only 24.72 inches of rain during 2013.

Greenville received 35.66 inches of rain in 2012, 31.41 inches during 2011, and 35.64 inches during 2010.

But the three years prior to that were all noted for recording above normal levels of precipitation. In fact, 2009 may have been the wettest year in local history, with 67.65 inches of rain recorded.

Most of Hunt County remains listed under a “moderate” drought, with the northern and northeastern sections reported under “abnormally dry” conditions.

Lake Tawakoni was reported at 428.59 feet as of the weekend, down almost 9 feet and at 66.1 percent of capacity. Still, it is doing better than other reservoirs in the region. Lake Lavon was listed at 48.2 percent of capacity, while Cooper (Chapman) Lake was only 34 percent full as of Saturday.
