Reserve deputy dies following Tuesday accident

GREENVILLE — A reserve deputy for the Delta County Sheriff’s Office died Tuesday afternoon, following a one vehicle accident in north Hopkins County.

The Texas Department of Public Safety reported Kevin Wingfield Jr. of Commerce was not believed to have died from injuries associated with the crash.

“They are saying it is due to a previous medical condition,” said DPS spokesperson Kyle Bradford.

Wingfield, 28, was reported to have been driving a 2008 Dodge pickup truck southbound on FM 1536 at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday when for an unknown reason the vehicle crossed the intersection of FM 71 and struck a fence.

Wingfield was reported by the DPS to have walked about 30 feet away from the accident before collapsing after having apparently suffering a seizure.

Bradford said at the time of the crash, Wingfield was still listed as a reserve deputy in Hopkins County.

There was no immediate word of the scheduling of funeral arrangements.

At the time of his death, Wingfield was a reserve deputy for Delta County, having previously served as a reserve for the Point Police Department from March 2012 to February of this year, where he resigned as a sergeant. Wingfield previously served as a reserve deputy for the Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office until 2007.

Wingfield was severely injured during a traffic accident six years ago.

Wingfield was returning home from work early on the morning of May 27, 2007 when his Dodge pickup was involved in the accident on State Highway 11 just west of Sulphur Springs.
