Drenching rains and a delayed start did not keep the crowds from coming to the Lakota Ranch Saturday to celebrate what would have been the birthday of a sacred white buffalo.
Arby Little Soldier said the birth at the ranch last year of Lightning Medicine Cloud filled his heart with joy, recalling how he and his wife Pat learned of the extremely rare event on May 11, 2011.
“We are so thankful for what was sent here, a legacy, a tradition,” Little Soldier said during Saturday’s opening of the 18th Annual Greenville Scholarship Native American Powwow. “We will never forget the little guy. He was the hope of all nations.”
Little Soldier found Lightning Medicine Cloud, who had been slain, at the ranch on April 30 and the body of his mother, Buffalo Woman, the next day. A criminal investigation into the deaths involving multiple agencies is under way.
