The identity of the next Greenville Worthy Citizen will be revealed Thursday night.
A few tickets are still on sale for the combined installation banquet of the Chamber of Commerce and Board of Development, the 92nd annual event for the Chamber and the 16th joint meeting of the two agencies.
The celebration begins with a reception at 6 p.m. followed by the dinner at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Fletcher Warren Civic Center.
This year’s guest speaker will be Dr. Mary Jane Vance, whose book, “Mary of the Angels” was recently published. Born in Manila, Philippines to Spanish and American parents, Mary Jane Hodges Vance grew up speaking English, Spanish, and Tagalog. During WW II, it was necessary to learn some Japanese in order to survive the Occupation before being liberated in 1945.
Despite losing three years of school during the war, she has earned three degrees in education from East Texas State University. She has served in a wide variety of education-related positions from teacher and administrator in Rains and Hunt Counties to the first Executive Director for the Consortium of State Organizations for Teacher Education.
Named Greenville’s Woman of the Year, Dr. Vance and her husband, Charles, are world travelers and dedicated grandparents.
Thursday’s banquet will also include the naming of Greenville’s Worthy Citizen and the installation of the Chamber of Commerce Board and the Board of Development.
Al Swanson was named as Worthy Citizen at the last banquet and is expected to be on hand to name the next recipient of the distinction.
Seating is limited.
