Statement released by police department concerning today's fatal accidental shooting of child

GREENVILLE — The Greenville Police Department has released a statement concerning this morning's shooting which claimed the life of a 12 year-old local boy:

The Greenville Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred in the 3200 block of Henderson Street.  On May 24, 2013, the Greenville Police Department Communications Center received a 911 call at 10:45 a.m. reporting that a person had been shot inside a residence.  The

first officer arrived on scene at 10:46 a.m. The individual who was shot was transported to Hunt

Regional Medical Center in Greenville where he was later pronounced dead.

The 12-year old victim, who was later identified as Keshawn Carter Davis, a student at the GISD 6th Grade Center, apparently died of a single gunshot wound.

According to Greenville Police Chief Daniel Busken, “By all accounts, there were no adults present when the shooting occurred. Five children, ages 4, 9 and three 12-year olds, were the only people in the home at the time of the shooting”.  Child Protective Services was called to the scene and are involved in the investigation.

At this time, the shooting does not appear to be intentional.  The events that led up to the shooting, and how the children came into possession of the firearm, are still under investigation.
