Commerce reports abduction attempt

COMMERCE — Police here are looking for a Hispanic male in his 30s, with no facial hair, in connection with a possible attempted abduction that occurred early Wednesday afternoon in the area of Chestnut and Church streets.

Commerce Police Community Resources Officer Alex Suarez said because of the child’s young age, police were not able to get an in-depth description of the suspect.

“According to the child, the man had been sitting in his vehicle for a few minutes before approaching the child,” he said. “The suspect motioned with his hand to the child from the vehicle but the child ran into her residence instead.”

Suarez said police are looking for a blue or green pickup truck, or a bluish green truck.

According to Suarez, police are patrolling the area, but have no leads as of yet.

“We have very little information to go on because of the child’s age,” he said. “As always, please make sure that your small children are always supervised when playing outdoors.”

Suarez said the public should call the police if they spot someone parked in the middle of the street who looks suspicious.

“If you have any information on suspects for this crime, the vehicle or any other crime, we ask that you please contact the Commerce Police Department at our non-emergency number of 903-886-1139,” he said.
