Bells to ring downtown today

GREENVILLE — Bells will be ringing in downtown Greenville this afternoon, as the Salvation Army kicks off the annual Red Kettle fundraising drive.

The event is scheduled for noon on the north side of the Hunt County Courthouse.

The Salvation Army has lined up several local dignitaries to help participate, including Greenville Mayor Steve Reid, Pastor Jim Gatliff with the Hunt County Baptist Association, Herald-Banner editor Caleb Slinkard, Hunt County District Attorney Noble Walker, Dave Weiland representing the Noontime Rotary Club, L-3 Vice President Mark Johnson and Ralph Sanders with the Greenville Independent School District.

The individuals will compete to see who can raise the most money from noon to 2 p.m., all for a good cause.

“With only days to go before Christmas, The Salvation Army in Greenville desperately needs your support,” Corps Administrator Sgt. Wes Trueblood said. “The Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive each Christmas raises money to help the most needy individuals and families in our community with food, winter clothing and toys for children who may otherwise not receive anything for Christmas. When you donate to our kettle, you can expect change.”

The Salvation Army is also in need of volunteers to man the kettles and ring bells during the holidays.

Along with the annual effort to provide local families in need with toys, food and other items for the holiday season, the Salvation Army Angel Tree campaign attempts to match up volunteers who can supply extra special requests for specific young individuals.

Those wanting to volunteer or who may want more information about the Salvation Army can call the agency at 903-455-1875 or visit the organization’s Greenville headquarters at 4601 King Street.
