Update: 911 call audio released in child murder case

GREENVILLE — The Hunt County Sheriff's Office has released the audio recording of the 911 call in which 2-year-old Brandon Herrara was reported dead.

The recording can be heard here.

The Hunt County Sheriff’s Office says capital murder charges were filed Tuesday against 23-year-old Arturo Vega and 22-year-old Gabriela Ortiz, both of Campbell.

Capt. Lana Adams says Vega and Ortiz, who’s a cousin to the victim, face arraignment and did not yet have attorneys. No bond amounts have been set. Both individuals remain in custody at the Hunt County Jail.

Here is the complete statement released today by the Hunt County Sheriffs Office:

Several Men and Women of the Sheriff’s Office as well as local CPS case workers spent nearly all day

Sunday and Monday working on what is no doubt on of the most difficult investigations possible.

At 6:03am Sunday Morning Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office responded to a location on I30 and FM

513 near Campbell in reference to a child not breathing. While talking with emergency medical services

personnel, the 2 year old male child, accompanied by two caregivers, stopped their vehicle on the 513

overpass of I30. There was an unrelated accident on I30 at the same time, so medical crews responding

from the accident scene, as well as Deputies converged on the location and made contact with the child

in a very short amount of time.

The arriving medical crew determined that the 2 year old was already deceased, and that he most likely

had been for some period of time. The man and woman accompanying the Child identified him as “her

cousin’s child”. They stated they had been in physical possession of the child for several weeks. The

Child was pronounced dead on the scene by the Justice of the Peace. He was then transported to the

Medical Examiner’s office in Dallas for an autopsy.

The two caregivers were initially placed in investigative detention. Very early Tuesday Morning warrants

were signed and served on both the Male and female caregivers. Both were charged with Capital

Murder. The male was identified as Arturo VEGA, 23, and the female as Gabriela ORTIZ, 22, both of

Campbell Texas. They are being held in the Hunt County detention center in lieu of $2 Million bond

each.

During the course of the investigation Monday afternoon, both parents individually as well as several

family members contacted the Sheriff’s Office and were interviewed.

The Sheriff’s Office is being assisted by the Texas Rangers, CPS and the Hunt County District Attorney’s

Office. Undersheriff Joe KNIGHT stated that, “every available resource has been placed into service

in this effort and the cooperation between agencies has been remarkable; yet the senselessness and

sadness of this event pervades the very heart of everyone involved in this disturbing event”.

Initial observations indicate the 2 year old was a victim of massive blunt force trauma. The investigation

is ongoing.
