A hauntingly good house in Greenville

GREENVILLE — For the past 11 years Greenville resident Juan Cornejo has been scaring the living daylights out of neighbors and friends, all for free.

Cornejo began building a haunted house for his children and neighbors to come and get a free scare. Since then, he has added more and more in the following years.

“I’ve gotten a lot of help from my friends and mainly the children,” he said. “They help me in everything.”

The haunted house on Meadowbrook Drive features a Jason Vorhees mannequine, ghosts, ghouls, and plenty of frights for those daring enough to take the step through the door, which reads “Keep Out.”

Cornejo said it began with his children, now he said he does it for anyone who wants to come.

“I do it for the people who can’t go to the expensive ones,” Cornejo said.

Cornejo received a casket for his birthday to add to the attraction. He said he wants to continue to make additions in the future.

“It started small and little by little we add on and every year it gets bigger and bigger,” he said.

Due to someone accidentally breaking part of the attraction last year, Cornejo said he is asking for donations to help keep up the haunted house.

“I spent $600 to fix it last year,” he said. “We are asking for donations that will go to make it bigger.”

According to Cornejo, he is not the one who deserves the credit for the attraction.

“Every day they’ve been here helping out,” he said. “I do this for the kids.”
