Ex-area deputy pleads guilty to charges

GREENVILLE —  A former Fannin County sheriff’s deputy and Ladonia city council member have pleaded guilty to federal civil rights violations.

William Clifford Isaacs Jr. of Ladonia is free on bond after entering the plea Monday, according to prosecutor Maureen Smith with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Texas in Sherman.

“He pleaded guilty to a felony count of civil rights violation,” Smith said, adding that Isaacs had pleaded to “four or five counts” under the indictment. “The rest were misdemeanors.”

The charge alleged Isaacs sexually assaulted female prisoners in the custody of the Fannin County Jail in 2012, during a time when he served as a transport officer with the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office.

Smith said Isaacs will be allowed to remain free on bond until his formal sentencing hearing.

“All he’s done at this time is enter a plea,” Smith said, adding a presentence investigation has been ordered in the case. “That will probably take another three months.”

Isaacs has resigned his position with the Ladonia City Council, according to Ladonia mayor Christopher Burch.

“He called me right after the hearing,” Burch said. “I explained to him that he had to resign and he understood.”

Burch said “I knew that something was going to be coming” prior to Monday’s plea.

“My concern was about the city” Burch said, adding a special council meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the Ladonia City Hall, at which time the council will vote to accept the resignation and appoint an interim council member to fill Isaacs’ position.
