Rains bring flooding fears, cooler temperatures

GREENVILLE — Multiple strong storms crossed North Texas again Monday, bringing with them fears of additional flooding in the region.

On the other hand, the passage of the storms also brought a break from the heat, as much cooler weather is in the National Weather Service forecast for the next few days.

A flood warning was in effect Monday night along portions of the Sabine River near Greenville and Quinlan. Heavy rains falling on ground still saturated from last Thursday’s storms were expected to raise the water level above the banks of the river by early this morning, creating flooding conditions in the same locations which ended up under water late last week. A flash flood watch — the first one issued for North Texas so far in 2014 — also remained in effect as of press time.

The storms which moved east/northeast through the region Thursday were expected to dump up to three inches of rain in Hunt County. Majors Field, the City of Greenville Municipal Airport, had received more than six-tenths of an inch within an hour, with rain still falling during the evening.

The storms were associated with an unusually powerful cold front, which dropped the temperature at the airport Thursday from 81 degrees at 4:15 p.m. to 64 degrees one hour later.

Winds were expected to shift out of the north by early this morning midnight, gusting as high as 25 mph, with a low near 55 by daybreak.

There was a 40 percent chance of more showers and thunderstorms in the forecast for today and tonight, with a high near 64 this afternoon and a low around 49 degrees by Wednesday morning.
