Racking up a record

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

GREENVILLE — The creativity of local and area organizations, individuals and businesses were on display during the fifth annual Bras for the Cause, which raised a record amount for the fight against breast cancer.

More than 175 creatively decorated bras were on display in downtown Greenville Thursday night. A huge crowd of visitors wandered along Lee Street and though the Uptown Forum and Landon Winery, judging the entries by donating $1 per vote, with the proceeds benefiting Janice’s Closet, a special fitting room located at Hunt Regional Medical Center in Greenville for women undergoing treatment for cancer, and the Hunt Regional Mobile Mammography Unit, which was parked outside the Hunt County Courthouse during the evening.

When the votes were counted, the total collected came to $87,506. Last year’s event raised more than $66,500.

There were also more than 100 official sponsors for Bras for the Cause this year.

Seven bras will receive awards which will be selected by an independent panel of judges, including:

— The BRAndishing your BRAnd winner, signifying the best creation featuring a company’s product or logo, was awarded to GEUS for “Energizing The Community.”

— The Training BRA award, for best creation by a first-time entrant, was presented to Greenville Animal Hospital for “Grumpy Cat.”

— The BRAveheart award, given to a bra created in honor of a cancer patient, either a survivor or victim was won by Janet Riddle friends and family for the “Deliver A Cure” display.

— The BRAniac winner, given to the creation with the best use of technology, decoration or otherwise, was “Cruising For A Cure”, from the Hunt Regional Mobile Mammography Unit.

— Landon Winery claimed the BRAinteaser award, for the creation with the best name, for it’s “Bra Bra Black Sheep.”

— The BRAids, BRAds & BRAss winner, for the most creative use of materials on a bra was presented to Vitas Innovative Hospice for “Stamp Out Cancer.”

— And the BRAnches & BRAmbles award, for the most effective nature theme or use of natural materials on a bra, was presented to the Hunt County Tax Office for “Hoot For A Cure.”

— There were also five BRAgging Rights awards presented to the top 5 money-raisers. In fifth place was “It’s A Breeze To Help Beat This Disease” from Caddo Basin Special Utility District, which raised $1,462; “Bras for Mrs. Claus”, submitted by Tommie Kerr, claimed fourth place with $1,611; “Cross Out Cancer” from Briarcliff Health Center raised $1,626 for third place; “Protect Your Doublewides” from Campers Against Cancer received $2,207 votes for second place; and “Protect Your Rack, Get A Mammogram”, submitted by Ashley Briggs, Melissa Zachary and Chandler Smith received $6,348 for first place.
