Rolling out of the past

The automobiles in the lead may be moving a little slow, but cut them some slack, because they are more than 70 years old.

The Northeast Texas Region Antique Automobile Club of America, otherwise known as the Greenville Antique Car Club, plans to roll out rain or shine Sunday for the “Pre War Tour” across northern Hunt County, according to organizer Glen Jones.

“The lead cars are all from before World War II,” Jones said. “The newer cars are going to be on the tail end.”

Even though there is a chance of rain in the forecast through at least early Sunday afternoon, Jones said the tour is expected to proceed as scheduled, with a start from the parking lot of the Hunt County Criminal Justice Center, 2801 Stuart Street, at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Jones expects up to 30 entries to proceed north out of downtown Greenville to the Vittitoe Gin on FM 1566 East. From there the tour will head to Commerce, for lunch at Braum’s, before returning to Greenville at around 4 p.m. Sunday for two blasts from the past.

The autos will stop at Crawford Smith, 2210 Lee Street, the third oldest business in continuous operation in Hunt County, where they will be on display and where City Council member Dan Perkins is to offer a brief presentation on the city’s history.

From there the tour will proceed to Barnhardt’s Steel Machine and Welding Shop, 2000 Jordan Street, the county’s second oldest business in continuous operation, before wrapping up with dinner at Jungle Burger, 5420 Interstate Highway 30.

Jones said the procession will not be in any hurry and likely will be moving at no more than 40 miles per hour. David Gish Jr. is expected to drive his classic Pierce Arrow, while the tour will also have two or three “T Models” also in the pack.

Anyone needing additional information about tour can call Jones at 903-268-4800.
