All-terrain vehicles to be banned in city parks

GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council is expected to act Tuesday on an ordinance which would ban the use of all-terrain vehicles and go-carts in the city parks.

In a memo to the Council, Parks and Recreation Director Colby VanGundy said he has heard from local residents concerned about the use of the vehicles endangering people in the parks.

“Complaints include various vehicles being driven at unsafe speeds with no regard to people in the area and of special concern are young children that aren’t easily visible,” VanGundy said. “Another complaint has been the noise level from these different vehicles.”

The Council intends to vote on the proposed ordinance during Tuesday’s regular session, starting at 6 p.m. in the Municipal Building, 2821 Washington Street. A work session is also set for 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The ordinance would prohibit the use of certain motorized vehicles, which would also include mini bikes and golf carts, within the city’s nine public parks.

Park maintenance vehicles, public safety vehicles, handicap accessibility vehicles and vehicles used in connection with special events would be exempt from the ordinance.
