Salvation Army helping city keep cool

GREENVILLE — With temperatures set to keep rising as the summer continues, one local service agency is hoping to help area residents keep their cool.

Sgt. Wes Trueblood with the Salvation Army in Greenville is seeking donations from the public to help pay for fans and air conditioners for those unable to purchase them on their own.

Trueblood said the organization received funding last summer from the federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program (EFSP).

“With that we bought a bunch of fans and portable air conditioning units,” Trueblood said. “The program was extremely popular.”

Greenville recorded its first triple digit high temperature of the year Friday and, even though it is supposed to be a little cooler for the next few days, Trueblood knows there will certainly be more days ahead where the temperature exceeds 100 degrees.

“We don’t have any money left over and I am already receiving several requests for assistance,” Trueblood said.

As such, Trueblood said the Salvation Army is seeking donations of fans of all sized and/or money to purchase fans.

“Either will work,” Trueblood said. Air conditioners would also be welcome. “We would prefer units if they are good working units.”

Trueblood said the donations can be dropped off between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Salvation Army offices, 4601 King Street in Greenville.

Those wanting more information can call the agency at 903-455-1875.
