Remembering Greenville’s great baseball legacy

Fans host ceremony to commemorate Majors beating Yankees

GREENVILLE — Fans of the former Greenville Majors intend to gather next week, to commemorate the anniversary of the most legendary baseball game in local history.

“Greenville Majors Fan” Greg Sims announced Friday that a brief ceremony is scheduled at 3 p.m. Wednesday, the exact hour of the start of the famous April 10, 1949 exhibition contest between the Majors and the New York Yankees, which the Majors won 4-3. The event will take place at outside of the gate to what once was “Majors Stadium” in downtown Greenville, where the game was played.

According to a Texas Historical Commission marker at the gate, Casey Stengel was the Yankees’ manager that day and Joe DiMaggio played center field.

While it is impossible for anyone to relive that momentous day, Sims said the event will attempt to give baseball fans just a taste of what it might have felt like to be at the game.

“There will be the playing of our National Anthem, the announcement of the line ups for the Yanks and Majors that cold, rainy 1949 day, the ‘throwing out of the first pitch’, group singing of ‘Take Me Out To The Ballgame’ and other baseball-themed shenanigans, stories and cheers,” Sims said.

Those wanting additional information about the event can contact Sims through email at greg.sims29@yahoo.com.
