Shaking hands with legendary lawman

GREENVILLE — Hunt County Constable Precinct 1 Terry Jones took just a moment during Friday’s final County Commissioners Court session of the year to pay tribute to a member of his staff.

But Jones said Deputy Constable Robert White was more than just an employee and a friend. Jones said White, who retires next month, is considered a law enforcement legend.

“This is a man who is just remarkable,” Jones said. “He is what I would call the real deal in law enforcement.”

Jones noted White’s more than 47-year career has included tenures with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), the Texas Highway Patrol and with the Hunt County Sheriff’s Office, where he served as Chief Deputy starting in 2002 under former Sheriff Don Anderson and lasting until the start of current Sheriff Randy Meeks’ first term.

That is when Jones brought him on board.

“There is not a time you can’t count on him,” Jones said, also noting White’s workout regimen has kept him in excellent physical condition.

“You are talking about a man who has been in anything there is,” Jones said, referring to White being at the scene of the incident at Ruby Ridge, at the Los Angeles Riots and most notably at the start of the 1993 siege on the Mount Carmel compound near Waco.

“He was hit three times at Waco and went back to help his guys during the cease-fire,” Jones said, as he handed White a plaque of appreciation and shook his hand. “You’re my hero.”

Although White is stepping down from his paid position, Jones intends to keep him available as a reserve volunteer officer, to allow White to retain his peace officer certification.

White was touched and said of his entire career, there was “about two percent I’d do over.”

As for his retirement plans?

“I’m sure I’ll be bothering somebody somewhere,” White said.
