Icy roads possible this weekend

Winter storm watch in effect Sunday

GREENVILLE — There was a potential for a major ice storm to hit the North Texas region Sunday.

The start of the work week could also be tricky Monday, with ice remaining on the roads, as the National Weather Service placed Hunt County and the surrounding area under a winter storm watch.

The arrival of a powerful cold left local temperatures in the 30s throughout Friday. Winds blew out of the north at up to 30 mph and a steady light rain fell, making conditions miserable.

The forecast calls for some improvement today, with only a slight chance of rain and with the high reaching the low 40s. It should remain dry overnight, with a low around 34.

The winter storm watch — which means there is a potential for a significant accumulation of snow, sleet or ice impacting travel — is in place for Hunt County between 6 a.m. Sunday and noon Monday. The weather is expected to get worse in a hurry, as there is a chance of rain, freezing rain and sleet in the forecast for Sunday morning.

The precipitation is expected to change over completely to sleet during Sunday afternoon, with a high near 37.

More sleet is forecast to fall and accumulate overnight Sunday into Monday morning, with a low just above freezing.

There is a chance the ice could build on bridges and overpasses and along trees and power lines during the storm.

The sleet is forecast to change over to rain by noon Monday.
